Bleeding brakes

Thought I would change the brake fluid on the car. having read previous threads this seems to have been a bit of a problem. I'm brave so had a go tonight, started with the rear, pumped it through til it was clear, but could I heck get the pedal like it was before. It now seems to go to the floor before it bites. Used a tube and a bottle so I could see the iar bubbles, Im thinking I should have used a pressure bleeder. Anyone got any thoughts on this before I try again tomorrow. Cheers

The way I normally bleed requires 2 people - pump brakes 3 times holding on the third. While pressure is on the pedal, open bleed nipple on one cylinder and close as soon as pressure lowers. Do it for each cylinder. Make sure reservoir is kept topped up.

I agree with Niloc, that way works good with me, you cannot pull air back in the system that way.

I agree - the two person way can be a pain for the second person (who usually doesn't want to be there - ie the missus ;) ) but it does prevent air being drawn into the system. I've tried various one man solutions, but haven't had a great deal of success with any of them. In this month's Car Mechanics magasine there is a review on various brake bleeding kits. Its quite interesting in that it recommends that we do NOT use the two man method, as the master cylinder piston is moved further up/down the bore than is usual, and this can cause the seal to be damaged (due to corrosion in the part of the bore that is usually not traversed).

i did mine the other week with the eezibeeld kit. first time i've done breaks on a car (said car still stops) worked a treat - sadly I can only assume they had been done recently as the fluid ran out clean and there were no bubbles. does be gthe question, how do you responsib;y dispose of used fluid? neil

Got an easibleed kit today, took me half an hour and there back to normal. Pheeew

I put my used brake fluid into an oil drain can and take it to the oil disposal point at the local tip (mixed with old engine oil in the same can).
