any help please. when driving at approx quarter throttle, it feels like driving against a hard wind, then when lifting off throttle, speeds up/ urgeing occurs. any suggestions please, its annoying when slowing down, as the car speeds up when lifting off the right foot!! all vacuum pipes renewed except evap pipes.
First thing is to replace is the engine coolant temperature sensor. Had similar symptoms with my 850 and couldn't work out what was going on. My mate diagnosed it over the phone! Get a genuine Volvo one though, there have been reports of compatability problems with aftermarket ones. The technical stuff behind it is the sensor is fooling the managment system into thinking the engine is cold, so when you lift off the throttle it overfuels, hence the surging. Conversely, the 'holding back' is again probably related to overfuelling, the symptoms being much the same as trying to drive a carburretor car with the choke out.:)
hi. thanks for a reply. i have replaced the water temp sensor but it is not a genuine volvo make. the problem is most noticeable when the engine is cold and not as severe when warm. does this ring any bells.? im reluctant to take it to a garage or dealer, cos i dont really have much confidence in anyone around where i live. you sometimes dont know if they fix it then fit parts which were ok and charge for it. im hopeing i can suss it out over this web, as with many other problems, have been successfull. i dixed the abs module, and if i took it to any garage for that, they would of fitted a new module giving me a bill i couldnt afford. out of curiosity, my temp gauge sitts at quarter past three, is this correct?
Yes, that's about right. Mine was showing OK, although the sensor was still shot. They tend to fail within a temperature range, not catastrophically. I fitted three before I got one that was reliable.
