plug-in synth - Sampletank?

Hi folks! I was wondering what else is out there besides sampletank that can be used from within Pro-Tools for additional sounds. I am trying to consolidate everything into just Pro-Tools so any other applications would not count. I don't want to have to same multiple setting in different applications. I want to be able to load up my session and have EVERYTHING there and ready to go. I have used the free version of Sampletank and I really like it. But before I plop down my $350 to go buy the full version, I wanted to ask the experts what else they might recommend. Again, I am basically wanting to replace my external sound modules with a RTAS plug-in. Your thoughts? Andrew

Hi Andrew.. Firstly, i highly recommend Sampletank. It's really easy to use, and sound FANTASTIC to boot. And when you open up a session, it's all right there where you left it. Secondly, i first used the Sampletank Free program and was quickly convinced to go get some more sounds. I bought the Piano Collection and the Omni Synth for $75 a piece, and they each had a free copy of Sampletank LE RTAS with them. So essentially, it's not a $350 investment but a $75 investment. Go to to check out the deals. Thirdly, the Piano Collection sounds great with a great variety of pianos, and it basically makes my Alesis NanoPiano, which i've sworn by for years, redundant. The Omni Synth is a great collection of 2 General Midi sets and one more specific set. The GM stuff is good enough that it replaces my other sound sources easily. Lastly.. there was a buggy install, with me not being able to find the RTAS install from the Sampletank LE disk. An enmail to tech support directed me to a downloadable installer, and after a tricky authorisation process, that the texch support guy was fantastic and quick about, i was rolling. All good for me.. I've used the converter - just a couple of Akai sets, but it seemed to work fine - except in Win XP. Luckily I have a dual boot 98SE so it worked in there. No ideas why it won't work in XP though... Simon

Just got XL today. To be honest, this was one of the funnest days of my LIFE. This stuff is just unbelievable. I just downloaded tons of MIDI files. Can't wait to start making music tomorrow.

This is a hot topic for me right now. I was just about to start a new thread and ask how difficult it is to load AKAI sample CD's into Sampletank and if there is any specific type of AKAI samples that you have to use. Seems like the sounds I've heard in sampletank are geared more towards rock than R&B and Jazz but if I could load any samples that I want it would be well worth it. One more thing, how CPU intensive is it. Would you say more or less taxing than a RENverb? Thanks.

Hi Apaulos, Judging only from the SampleTank demo, I would say more taxing on CPU than even RenVerb, but still, very nice program. Bastiaan noticed it too.

ok, I did it. I picked up a copy of Sampletank L at guitar center for $120! Couldn't say no to that! Thanks for all the good advice... Andrew
