actually i'm not trying to do exactly that. instead of a track folder with multiple tracks for each variation of the instrument which would be cluttery, what i'd like to do, is have just one track that is Cellos. reaper allows you to assign a different channel on different notes within that one track. so you could have one track with all your notes in it, except some of those notes are assigned to a midi channel where you are getting just staccato, and other notes are assigned to a track where you're getting sustain. but all in one track. i may end up having to do it with multiple tracks in reaper though. which would be a bit cluttery in my tracks pane, but since reaper does allow to edit multiple tracks at once, won't be so bad in the editing phase. except i'm not sure how to go about editing multiple midi tracks at once in reaper either. I should have mentionned, i have kontakt 4. sorry. it might work ok though. just loaded it up. this is what whatsup was talking about. but i'm pretty sure you can do this same thing with just one track, by assigning different channels to specific notes in your piano roll with a right click on that note. i just can't seem to get my kontakt to play through the different channels right now. it is only working on channel 1 no matter what i do it seems. if i could just figure out how to get it so i could set my midi input to channel 2. and have that play an instrument i have set to channel 2 in kontakt, i think i'd be good. but i can't get that working. only on channel 1 so far. i must need to change some setting somewhere i think. or else, i'd be stuck making a separate track for each instrument and stick it all in a track folder, and set them all to channel 1. but i'd like to get my kontakt to play on individual channels. that would be hardcore if it's possible.

is it even possible to have a track set to input midi channel 2 and in kontakt have an instrument in midi channel 2, and have that work? or must it absolutely be channel 1? because so far it seems that way to me, except i can't figure out why you can assign different midi channels to different instruments inside of kontakt. maybe to use the same instance of kontakt for multiple outputs and have them use different sounds? i'm a little confused i think.

I suspect the problem here is with the VST, or the VST settings.

not sure exactly how to use this. originally it always only showed me two rows, so i though i was assigning my left and right signals to my outputs. but now there are 16 rows. so i'm wondering if those are my midi channels. i've tried changing this around a few times to see if it could solve my problem, but to no avail so far. what is this for exactly?

OK, time for a screenshot. Kontakt 3.5 here, but... This hasn't changed in K4! All MIDI channels in one track here:

ya, that part i've got. i've noticed you have separate outputs for each midi channel as well. i have mine setup this way also. but the thing is, if my instrument is set to channel 2, i get nothing but silence. i get no meters showing any kind of life either, whether it be for my outputs in kontakt, or for tracks in reaper. this is the part i can't figure out. it only works if i set it to channel one. which sucks because that means that instance of kontakt can only play one instrument at a time. there must be something i have set wrong somewhere i think.

at this point i just want to be able to have one single instrument in kontakt set to channel 2 and playing through my midi keyboard. i think if i can solve that issue the rest should be simple enough..... hopefully. thx for all your help btw.

If you select All MIDI Inputs, then Reaper will receive from any and all MIDI input there is. You can narrow it down to the input of your soundcard. Logically you would set this to where your MIDI controller is connected, and I presume that's your Edirol interface. But, have you though of changing global channel of your MIDI controller to 2 or 3 or whatever? Because by default all MIDI controllers send over channel 1, and if you want to play/record on channel 2, you have to change its global channel. Or use multimode, which is rare on controllers. So, have a try at that. I know when I recorded this song from where these screenshots come from, I had to change the global channel to record each channel in the single MIDI track. Which makes sense, don't you think?
